The Albanese government has suggested it will intervene to ensure regional airline Rex does not collapse, after the carrier stopped selling tickets for some services amid reports administrators were to be appointed.

The federal transport minister, Catherine King, said her department had held “significant discussions” with Rex’s leadership on Tuesday after the airline on Monday requested a trading halt ahead of a significant announcement to the market.
